I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. I had so many human races recommend it to me that I thought it would be object 'special'. I did enjoy the part where Julia is in the bathtub marvelling at her unborn small fry moving from verge to verge in her belly. Julia was so amazed that her unborn small fry was actually making "ripples in the water" from moving so much. THAT brought back pleasant minds of my child-bearings! From back cover: "His point to is Connor Navigate and he falls like an supernatural being of clemency from the sky, braving the flames to save the grandmother he loves but knows he cannot have. For Julia Bishop, is the helpmate of his trusty friend and concomitant "ladderman", Ed Tully. Julia loves them both-until a hot-headed contretemps on Montana's Serpent Mountain compulsions her to choose between them, and burns a symbol on all their hearts. In the aftermath of fire, Connor boards on a harrowing journey to the edge of human experience, travelling the realm's worst wars and roughs to take pixes that find him station but never peace of mind. Reckless of a life he no longer wants, again and again he dares death to take him, until another momentous day on another abstinent, he must walk through fire once more..."
