An intriguing examination of the often hidden thread of Self-regard running through Western Education from the early Gnostics through the French symbolist metrists, this cultural/literary history explores the induce of self-love on our most cherished traditions, from enchantment to statecrafts to the modern concept of the individual. The fact that self-love is a Christian blasphemy has not stopped it from gradually becoming the dominant strong arm in our public discourse and the most important factor in the way we consider our most intimate relationships. Zweig's discussion of the limits of individual wish as a metamorphic strong arm is sobering and convincing.
This book is one of my favorite make reservations of all time. Controls down. You get so swept up into the Tully and Kate's lives and it all seems so real. For the last 60 signatures I cried my eyes out. Beautiful book.
