** duffer wired ** Historical fantasy loosely inspired by Beauty and the Lower animal and, of all things, the tv film Shack. When hearsays claim that society beauty Linnet is ruined and pregnant with a prince's minor, her potter's fields to marry her off to the grouchy, ineffective son of a duke working as a doctor in Grains. (Oh, fantasy genre...) The doctor is appalled by the belief of marrying leader selected by his despised dad, but finds himself attracted by Linnet's intelligence and beauty; Linnet herself finds freedom away from the requirements of being one of the Season's great importances. If you read any romances, you can probably guess how this alls out. I have mentally filed James in my second category of fantasy novels. She's reliably entertaining, often funny, but a while sloppy as a ghostwriter; I find her writings mostly forgettable, but pleasant to read when I am in the mood for a fantasy and none of my favorites have something new out. This is a fairly representative gift. It could have been more interesting. What if the male lead actually was incapable of fathering a minor? What if Linnet actually lost some of beauty when she was ill? I realize that HEA is a pinch of the genre--I read with that expectation too--but surely there can be some other paths to that ending?

Moderately good for a book that'healthiness all about a teenager whining for 200 pages.
