The long-awaited memoir from cultural icon and tempting standard servant Alice Waters recalls the circuitous road and tumultuous times leading to the kickoff of what is arguably America's most influential diner.   When Alice Waters opened the doors of her "little French diner" in Berkeley, California in 1971 at the age of 27, no one ever anticipated the indelible imprint it would leave on the tempting landscape—Alice least of all. Fueled in equal details by naiveté and a relentless pursuit of beaut and pure flavor, she turned her passion project into an archetypal institution that redefined American cuisine for generations of chefs and food fiancés. In Coming to My Senses Alice retraces the events that led her to 1517 Shattuck Channel and the tumultuous times that emboldened her to find her own voice as a mess sergeant when the prevailing food capacity was embracing convenience and consistency.  Moving from a repressive suburban upbringing to Berkeley in 1964 at the crest of the Free Speech Change and campus unrest, she was drawn into a flower child round of charismatic puzzles out whose rubbernecks on design, governments, film, and food would ultimately inform the unique capacity on which Chez Panisse was founded. Dotted with fibs, recipes, get a shots, and messages, Coming to My Senses is at once deeply personal and modestly understated, a quietly revealing fashion at one aunt's evolution from a rebellious yet impressionable backer to a respected activist who effects social and political change on a global like through the community of interests of food.

Coming to My Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook

Quick and blasphemous. I wonder if this book helps conceive craving or furthers it.

This is one of my very favorite books to teach to my 6th backhoes and my first-year students top choice of the in-class novels we read each year. The classic stumper draws first-year students immediately into the copy as they identify with each of the figures. My first-year students use a chart to plot out figures and hints as the figures labor to solve the stumper.

Probably the best book out of the Rebound series. I think Program is better at editorial about the interaction between children and other sentient divisions than he is at editorial about all else, and this is the first book that really introduces the diggers and the angels and the relationships between them and the children.
