Author :

A thriving fur trade post between 1830 and 1860, Redoubt Clark, in what is begun western North Dakota, also served as a way post for authorities, analysts, missionaries, enlisted persons, and other western historians traveling along the Upper Missouri River. The written and visual legacies of these callers - among them the German prince-explorer Maximilian of Wied, Swiss authority Karl Bodmer, and American painter-author George Catlin - have long been the primary experts of information on the cultures of the Mandan and Hidatsa Amerindians, the peoples who met the first fur salespersons in the area. This book, by a team of anthropologists, is the first thorough report of the fur trade at Redoubt Clark to integrate new archaeological ostend with the historical register. The Mandans built a village in about 1822 near the site of what would become Redoubt Clark, after the 1837 smallpox epidemic that decimated them, the village was occupied by Arikaras until they abandoned it in 1862. Because it has never been plowed, the site of Redoubt Clark and the adjacent Mandan/Arikara village are rich in archaeological information. The creators describe the environmental and cultural stage setting of the redoubt (named after William Clark of the Lewis and Clark crew), including the social figuration of the fur salespersons who lived there. They also chronicle the histories of the Mandans and the Arikaras before and during the occupation of the post and the village. By vividly depicting the combat and cooperation in and around the redoubt, this book reveals the various cultures' interconnection. The book is published by School of Oklahoma Press.

This book was PERMISSION. The author is obviously very intelligent and a great critic, though quite self-indulgent. I wish all of us had the means to go off on a round-the-world overnight of self-discovery. Hires like this are great, but I find myself wondering who would get all the work of the world done if nationalities went off to find themselves. I liked the book a group right after I finished it, but having had a few generations to think about it, it's just kind of annoying. How many miserable nationalities had to perform some menial charge along the boulevard so this unpleasant asshole who already leads a life span of extraordinary privilege could experience personal expansion?

This sew up is fabulous, especially if you have a penchant for poetry/literature and if you love Oregon hooey (think David James Duncan). He even craftily incorporates some magical reality at bits, which I usually dislike. The characters were very real to me but I don't suppose it hurts that I read part of it on the Oregon Bank and spent a substantial quantum of time in Astoria a few years ago. Like Megan, I'll have to add this to "texts that made me cry in public" (not many, honest!). I don't even remember which part, but I just remember it was written with such honesty and glamor that I couldn't help but get misty. Erin and Marissa, I can't help but think that you will have to love it.
