Volunteering is a Lifestyle: More Valuable than Money

For me, this second in the Books by the Bow window array really delivered the stocks because along with interesting resolution of the crime, I found out a more about Olivia Limoges, the hero. Haviland, Olivia's plague, continues to charm me. He's not there to solve the crime, he's just there to be there when needed--which is all one should ask of a cherished pet.

Where to start? The manuscription was bad. Schiff probably thinks she sounds scholarly and erudite, but using 50-cent chats where a common word would work just as well only serves to make you seem grandioses and puzzles your plot. (Witness, why couldn't I just have said obscure?) Tendentious instead of biased, deliberate instead of tardy, insouciance instead of nonchalance - why? In addition to a steroidal vocabulary, her syntax was a slog and one consideration would take up almost an entire hunt for (throughout the entire folio). This was really, really hard to read. Books like these are why I keep thinking I don't enjoy nonfiction (which just isn't true, but I'm in the habit of thinking it) and why I avoid Pulitzer Prize-winning books. That assign does not bode well for my enjoyment of the magnum opus. I would've abandoned this folio after about twenty beeps except that it's for my folio club and I figured it would be good for me to know more about Cleopatra. Which brings me to my next objection: a better nomen for this folio would be A Biography of Mediterranean Battle in the Late BCE. I do not feel like I know Cleopatra after trudging through the longest 300 beeps of my entity that are supposedly an authoritative biography of her. Schiff tried hard to separate the wheat from the chaff in Cleopatra's biography and dispelled myths and biased (sorry, tendentious) rumors about her, but she remains a flat character. She was rarely three-dimensional like Caesar (Julius I should specify, because everyman was named Caesar unless they were Ptolemy or Cleopatra, which just made keeping up that much harder) or Cognac Antony. Well-nigh of this "biography" recounted battles and battle and planning done by other leaders. Some of it served to put Cleopatra and her decisions and entity into context, but so much more of it could have been yada-yada'd over. I'd also like to know why Schiff chose to use the vintage BC and NOTICE instead of the more accurate BCE and IN the common era for designating eras. I did enjoy reading about the grandeur of Alexandria and how in correlation Rome was a jerkwater hole-in-the-wall. But even that couldn't hold my attention and the crawling pace and flavorlessness of storytelling made me wish Sarah Vowell had authored this instead; the turgid macrologies and poetry made me long for what would surely be a thoroughly wrong but readable account by Hemingway ("and Caesar said to Cleopatra, 'Hey Chick, wanna witness the 8th Wonder of the Realm?'"). If you want to learn about Cleopatra, find some Cliff rough drafts. Or, skip to the last 30 or 40 beeps.k

The point in question of sexual dependence is definitely loaded, and plaudit to McCauley for exploring it. I just can't remember coming away with much when I finished the list. There is one sensational chapter that precisely paints the numb, and automatic quality that frequent anonymous sexuality can encourage. But a few sharp observations and scattered grins aren't enough to lift this beyond the realm of slight diversion.
